Celebrating STEAM Day at Sakalya Wisdom Early Years: Where Art and Science Take Flight

This year at Sakalya Wisdom Early Years, we celebrated STEAM Day with a beautiful blend of art, science, and childlike wonder! Falling just after the birthday of Marie Curie—one of the greatest pioneers in the field of radiation research—our celebration focused on making science accessible and fun for our little learners. The teachers crafted an imaginative activity that brought both science and art to life through the creation of colourful butterflies made with cellophane paper.

The children excitedly crafted these delicate butterflies and then took them to our roof garden, outdoor play area and skating rink. When the sunlight hit their cellophane wings, the colours reflected onto the ground, creating a kaleidoscope of shades and patterns. This moment turned into a spontaneous discovery for the children, as they noticed how light passes through the colourful material and changes the appearance of objects below.

As we explored these visual effects, the teachers explained the basics of light and radiation in simple terms, inspired by Marie Curie’s legacy. The children learned how light travels and interacts with transparent materials, observing firsthand how colours can change based on light and angle. It was a joyful and meaningful day where science and art came together, transforming the concept of STEAM into a real-world experience for our young learners.

STEAM Day at Sakalya Wisdom Early Years was not just about a fun activity—it was about sparking curiosity and helping children see the connections between science, art, and the world around them. A celebration where learning and imagination can take flight!
